Language Environment

Embracing the World: A Vibrant Language Environment in our Primary Division

Stepping onto the Global Stage: Modern Foreign Languages

At A-School, nurturing lifelong learners with a global perspective begins early. In our Primary Division, we pride ourselves on cultivating a rich, multilingual atmosphere where languages come alive. In addition to mastering English and Chinese, our Grade 5 students step onto the global stage by selecting a Third Language option—choosing from Japanese, Spanish, French, or German.

Our objective is simple yet profound: to widen our students' language exposure, build their confidence, and broaden their cultural horizons.

True language immersion extends beyond the textbook. We ensure that our target languages are a visible, accessible part of our students' daily lives through a robust reading culture:

Our Immersive English Language Environment

English is not just a subject at A-School; it is the heartbeat of our daily campus life. We provide an immersive English-speaking environment where students organically build exceptional literacy skills, communicative confidence, and higher-order thinking capabilities. All subjects other than LIberal Arts and Chinese are taught in English with students being given the opportunity to study Liberal Arts in English or Chinese for Middle School.

A School-Wide Culture of Language Immersion

What truly sets A-School apart is how these languages transcend classroom walls, blending together into a unified, resource-rich environment.

A Literary Oasis: Physical and Digital Libraries

We ensure that English and all four target third languages are a visible, accessible part of our students' daily lives through a robust reading culture:

  • The Central Library: Our main library boasts an expansive collection of non-fiction English books alongside a dedicated and ever-expanding foreign language section housing age-appropriate storybooks, graphic novels, and periodicals in Japanese, Spanish, French, and German.
  • Classroom Libraries: Every classroom features its own curated mini-library. Students are constantly surrounded by colorful literature, picture books, and quick-read resources that they can pick up during free-reading periods, normalizing multilingual exposure.
  • Differentiated Digital Reading Labs: Alongside physical books, frameworks like the SRA Reading Lab (Scholastic Reading Achievement) are utilized to provide tailored, independent English instruction that enhances text comprehension and vocabulary.

Language Day & Cross-Cultural Exchanges

A major yearly highlight is our transdisciplinary Language Week. This mega-event merges English, Chinese, and our Modern Foreign Language streams into a spectacular campus-wide celebration. Students actively drive the festival, engaging in cross-curricular learning activities, interactive language games, and cultural showcases that bring their skills to life in authentic settings.
